Water primrose: physical removal
A replicated, before-and-after study in 2011-2014 at an oxbow lake in Lower Saxony, Germany (Hussner et al. 2016) found that five or six treatments of hand weeding, plus the single use of an excavator shovel on a small area, removed 94-100% of water primrose Ludwigia grandiflora mass. The amount of water primrose removed declined in each round of weeding. The plant was fully eradicated at only one of five small trial sites. Subsequent removal from the whole lake eradicated water primrose from 99% of its former area. At five small (1.5-30 m²) trial sites, water primrose was removed by hand weeding six times between June-October 2011. The whole lake (area 510 x 30 m) was then treated in August 2013, mainly by hand weeding by four people wading and using a boat, but a small area was also excavated with an excavator shovel. Follow up hand weeding of the whole lake was carried out four times over the next two years. (Welmoed Mollema)
